Author Profile

🧑‍🎓Early Academic Pursuits

Dr. Owais Mohmad Bhat, M.Sc., Ph.D., began his illustrious academic journey in the picturesque region of Kashmir, India. His passion for life sciences led him to pursue a B.Sc. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Zoology from Sri Pratap College, affiliated with the University of Kashmir. During this period, he developed a strong foundation in the biological sciences, which would later be crucial in his research pursuits.Following his undergraduate studies, Dr. Bhat continued his academic journey at the University of Kashmir, where he completed his M.Sc. in Biochemistry from 2005 to 2007. This period was marked by his growing interest in molecular biology and biochemistry, particularly in understanding the biochemical mechanisms underlying various physiological and pathological processes. His academic pursuits eventually led him to one of the most prestigious institutions in India, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. Here, Dr. Bhat embarked on his Ph.D. journey in Biochemistry under the guidance of eminent professors, including Prof. Veena Dhawan, Prof. Deepak Kaul, and Dr. N.V. Giridharan. His thesis, titled “To Study the Effect of Terminalia Arjuna on Interleukin-18 Induced Modulation of Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor-γ Transcriptome in Apo E -/- Mice Model of Atherosclerosis,” explored the molecular mechanisms involved in cardiovascular diseases, particularly atherosclerosis, and the potential therapeutic effects of natural compounds.

🧪Professional Endeavors and Research Focus

Dr. Owais Mohmad Bhat’s professional journey is characterized by his dedication to understanding complex biochemical pathways and their implications in human health and disease. After completing his Ph.D., he moved to the United States, where he worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences at Louisiana State University. Under the mentorship of Professor Yogesh Saini, Dr. Bhat’s research focused on the role of macrophages in respiratory diseases, particularly the impact of altered macrophage populations on immune responses in respiratory airspaces. In 2016, Dr. Bhat joined the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Virginia Commonwealth University as a Post-Doctoral Researcher. Here, he worked under the supervision of Professor Pin-Lan Li, where he delved into the regulation of autophagic flux by lysosome-associated signaling pathways. His research uncovered critical insights into how deficient autophagy in coronary arterial smooth muscle cells (CASMCs) could lead to atherosclerosis, with a particular focus on the role of lysosomal dysfunction in vascular calcification.ince December 2021, Dr. Bhat has been serving as a Scientist-D and Ramalingaswami Fellow at the Department of Biotechnology, School of Life Sciences, Central University of Kashmir. His current research focuses on vascular calcification, particularly the formation and accumulation of calcium phosphate salts within the vascular wall, which is associated with aging, chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, and atherosclerosis. His work explores the role of small membrane-bound bodies, known as matrix vesicles (MVs), and their exosome counterparts in nucleating calcium phosphate crystals, leading to vascular calcification.

🧬Contributions and Research Focus

Dr. Bhat’s research has significantly contributed to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying vascular calcification. His work has demonstrated how lysosomal dysfunction and sphingolipid metabolism play a crucial role in the excretion of exosomes from arterial smooth muscle cells (SMCs), ultimately leading to vascular calcification. His research also highlights the potential therapeutic targets within the mammalian target of rapamycin complex (mTORC) signaling pathways, which could be manipulated to prevent or reverse vascular calcification. In addition to his research on vascular calcification, Dr. Bhat has also contributed to the field of cardiovascular diseases through his studies on the role of sphingolipids, ceramide, and sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) in regulating autophagy and exosome secretion. His research has opened new avenues for understanding how these molecules influence the development of calcification in atherosclerotic plaques and arterial walls.

🏆Accolades and Recognition

Dr. Owais Mohmad Bhat’s dedication to his research has not gone unnoticed. He has been awarded the prestigious Ramalingaswami Fellowship by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, which recognizes outstanding scientists returning to India to contribute to the country’s scientific research landscape. This fellowship has allowed Dr. Bhat to continue his groundbreaking research at the Central University of Kashmir, where he has secured funding of 113.6 Lakhs for his projects.

🌍Impact and Influence

Dr. Bhat’s work has had a profound impact on the scientific community’s understanding of vascular calcification and its underlying mechanisms. His research has provided valuable insights into potential therapeutic targets for preventing or treating cardiovascular diseases, particularly in populations at high risk, such as those with chronic kidney disease or diabetes. Moreover, as a mentor to four Ph.D. scholars, Dr. Bhat is actively contributing to the next generation of scientists. His guidance and expertise are helping shape the future of biochemistry and molecular biology research in India.
